Anne Bogel Author Event & Live Podcast

February 11, 2020 The Story Shop
IMG_3773.jpg

Constantly adding to your TBR list listening to the What Should I Read Next? podcast? Reading about all things bookish at the Modern Mrs Darcy blog? Love her books on personality types or the reading life? Now meet Anne Bogel on tour for her new book Don’t Overthink It!

Publisher Summary: We’ve all been there: stuck in a cycle of what-ifs, plagued by indecision, paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong. Nobody wants to live a life of constant overthinking, but it doesn’t feel like something we can choose to stop doing. It feels like something we’re wired to do, something we just can’t escape. But is it?

Anne Bogel’s answer is no. Not only can you overcome negative thought patterns that are repetitive, unhealthy, and unhelpful, you can replace them with positive thought patterns that will bring more peace, joy, and love into your life. In Don’t Overthink It, you’ll find actionable strategies that can make an immediate and lasting difference in how you deal with questions both small–Should I buy these flowers?–and large–What am I doing with my life? More than a book about making good decisions, Don’t Overthink It offers you a framework for making choices you’ll be comfortable with, using an appropriate amount of energy, freeing you to focus on all the other stuff that matters in life.

Event Details

This author event is extra special for many reasons!

One: Be a part of a live podcast for What Should I Read Next? with special guests from the Jane Austen Book Club, a book club that formed from strangers meeting in The Story Shop at our previous event with Anne. How fun?!

Two: We ran out of tickets so fast the last time Anne was in town! This year, we’re hosting the podcast portion of the event in the beautiful Wayfarer Music Hall in order to accommodate more readers, then moving over to The Story Shop for the book signing portion of the evening.

Tickets include a copy of Anne’s new book for the book signing, light refreshments, and all the fun associated with a live podcasting event!

Z is for Zafón. Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer’s son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in what he finds in the “cemetery of lost books,” a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julián Carax. But when he sets out to find the author’s other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax’s books in existence. Soon Daniel’s seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets–an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.

September Ladies' Book Club: When You Are Old

August 19, 2019 The Story Shop
y.jpg

Join us for the September session of our Ladies Book Club! This month, we will be reading When You Are Old by William Butler Yeats, the next book in the beautiful Penguin Drop Caps series. Here is the publisher's summary:

Y is for Yeats. A specially compiled edition for the Penguin Drop Caps series, When You Are Old will include the most accessible, best-known poems by W.B. Yeats from his early years that made the Nobel Prize winning writer and poet popular in his day.  The volume will include all the major love poems written most notably for the brilliant yet elusive Irish revolutionary Maude Gonne. Recalling Yeats’s 1890s fascination in  aestheticism and the arts and crafts movement, selections will draw from the first published versions of poems from works such as Crossways, The Rose, The Wind Among the Reeds, In the Seven Woods, The Green Helmet and Other Poems, Responsibilities, The Wild Swans at Coole, and Michael Robartes and the Dancer. A selection Irish myths and fairytales including “The Wanderings of Oisin,” a Celtic fable and his first major poem, represent his fascination with mysticism, spiritualism and the rich and imaginative heritage of his native land.

Cost is $25. Included with our price is a copy of the Penguin Drop Caps Collector's Edition of the book, light refreshments, and good conversation. We will meet in our celebration room on Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. Call or come by to register! (678-635-8801)

August Ladies' Book Club: Sky Burial

July 22, 2019 The Story Shop
X.jpg

Join us for the August session of our Ladies Book Club! This month, we will be reading Sky Burial by Xinran, the next book in the beautiful Penguin Drop Caps series. Here is the publisher's summary:

X is for Xinran. In 1994, journalist and author Xinran met a Chinese woman with an extraordinary story. For over thirty years, since the 1950s, Shu Wen searched the mountains of north Tibet for her husband, a Chinese military doctor, who was missing in action. Her moving and unforgettable life story brilliantly recreated by Xinran, gives insight into the landscape, religion and people of Tibet. At the same time it illuminates the complex and emotional relationship and history between the Tibetans and Chinese. Traveling thousands of miles, and taken in by a Tibetan family, Shu Wen lived a nomadic life through numerous seasons with silence and simplicity, motivated by her search for her husband. An unforgettable and ultimately uplifting tale of loss, loyalty, courage and survival, above all, Sky Burial is an epic and enduring love story.

Cost is $25. Included with our price is a copy of the Penguin Drop Caps Collector's Edition of the book, light refreshments, and good conversation. We will meet in our celebration room on Thursday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. Call or come by to register! (678-635-8801)

July Ladies' Book Club: Kristin Lavransdatter, I: The Wreath

June 24, 2019 The Story Shop
u.jpg

Join us for the July session of our Ladies Book Club! This month, we will be reading Kristin Lavrandsdatter, 1: The Wreath by Sigrid Undset, the next book in the beautiful Penguin Drop Caps series. Here is the publisher's summary:

U is for Undset. Set in fourteenth-century Norway, The Wreath, the first volume of Undset’s medieval trilogy begins the life story of Kristin Lavransdatter. Starting with Kristin’s childhood and continuing through her romance with Erlend Nikulaussøn, a dangerously charming and impetuous man, Undset re-creates the historical backdrop in vivid detail, immersing readers in the day-to-day life, social conventions, and political undercurrents of the period. But the story she tells is a modern one, brought to life with clarity and lyrical beauty in this remarkable translation by Tiina Nunnally.  Defying her parents and stubbornly pursuing her own happiness, Kristin emerges as a woman who loves with power and passion.

Cost is $25. Included with our price is a copy of the Penguin Drop Caps Collector's Edition of the book, light refreshments, and good conversation. We will meet in our celebration room on Thursday, July 18 at 7:00 p.m. Call or come by to register! (678-635-8801)

February Ladies' Book Club: Five Children and It

January 22, 2019 The Story Shop
Five Children and It.jpg

Join us for the February session of our Ladies Book Club! This month, we will be reading Five Children and It by E. Nesbit, the next book in the beautiful Penguin Drop Caps series. Here is the publisher's summary:

N is for Nesbit. While exploring the environs of their summer home, five brothers and sisters find a Psammead, or Sand-fairy, in a nearby gravel pit: “Its eyes were on long horns like a snail’s eyes, and it could move them in and out like telescopes; it had ears like a bat’s ears, and its tubby body was shaped like a spider’s and covered with thick soft fur; its legs and arms were furry too, and it had hands and feet like a monkey’s.” The Psammead is magical and, every day, the ancient and irritable creature grants each of them a wish that lasts until sunset. Soon they find their wishes never seem to turn out right and often have unexpected—and humorous—consequences. And when an accidental wish goes terribly wrong, the children learn that magic, like life, can be as complicated as it is exciting. Five Children and It continues to be one of our most enduring stories, as fantastical and as it is true to the wonders of childhood.

Cost is $25. Included with our price is a copy of the Penguin Drop Caps Collector's Edition of the book, light refreshments, and good conversation. We will meet in our celebration room on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. Call or come by to register! (678-635-8801)
